What is your teaching/musical background?
I gave my first guitar lesson in 1983, and since than I have worked with hundreds of students. I studied with the legendary Steve Siktberg for six years and Jean Mclelland for five years. In addition I have studied music at SUNY Purchase and the New School. I've also studied creative writing with many instructors including Allen Ginsberg.
What are your rates and do you do house calls or Online lessons?
When working in my studio located in the East 20s in Manhattan or Online lessons, I charge $50 for 30 minute sessions and $75 for 45 minute sessions. Bulk rates are available. I also have a 48 hour cancellation policy. House call rates depend on your location.
I have small hands - is it ok to learn on a half size guitar?
Yes, there are many half and three quarter-sized guitars on the market that work perfectly for small hands.
I played another instrument as a child and really found reading sheet music to be a turn off. Will you make me read music?
NO! Sight reading can be very helpful but it is by no means necessary to developing musical skills.
Is it ok to start on an electric guitar?
As long as an instrument is in good working condition you should play whatever type of instrument, acoustic or electric that gets you excited and motivated.
I would like see you right after work and don't want to bring my guitar to the office. Can I use one of yours?
I have many guitars in my studio for students to use during lessons if they wish.
What ages do you work with?
I have worked with students as young as 5 or 6 all the way up to their late 60s and beyond. Every student has unique assets regardless of age. Love of music is important, age is not.
I’m an adult and have never played a musical instrument. As a child I was told I had no musical ability. Is there hope for me?
Absolutely! Many of us were told as youngsters that we had no musical talent. Usually we were told this nonsense by a public school music instructor using “cookie cutter” screening techniques to find which students will respond to a single teaching method. I do not use a one-dimensional approach to teach. If you love music then we can get you creating music.
I'm in my mid-30s and have been playing on and off since my high school rocker days. I tend to play the same chords and licks over and over. I finally have some free time and I’d love to break out of this "box" and really understand how the fingerboard works. Can you help me?
Yes! We all fall into traps playing the old tried and true things over and over. There are limitless ways to looking at the guitar. Exploring new and creative ways of using new as well as familiar materials is one of the most satisfying and rewarding experiences for any student.
